The second edition of the festival, Jashn-e-Rekhta opened with the eloquent exchange of dialogues in Urdu language between lyricist- poet Javed Akhtar and veteran actress Shabana Azmi. The performance by Akhtar and Azmi in the much-acclaimed play, ‘Kaifi Aur Mein’ brought out the charming love story of Azmi’s parents’, Kaifi Azmi and Shaukat Kaifi.
The play was not actively performance-based per se. It was indeed a series of interaction between Shaukat and Kaifi derived from Shaukat’s book ‘Yaad Ki Rehguzaar’ along with portions of various interviews of Kaifi. While Shabanaread the part of her mother-Shaukat, Javed Akhtar, on the other hand, read the dialogues of Kaifi.
Set amidst the backdrop of political and rebellious pre-independent India, the play summarized the journey of Shaukat and Kaifi, right from their first meeting to the blossoming of love, marriage and facing the life challenges together. The extracts of the play highlighted many aspects of their relationship which ranged from playful to emotional, rebellious and charming. Their love story was like a bittersweet symphony and it was entwined with well-timed ghazals.
The play not only complemented the festival that aims to create awareness and appreciation for the Urdu language but also celebrated love in its purest form.
